About Blue Ridge

A mountain town with deep roots, a rich history, and a bright future in the heart of Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains

The History of Blue Ridge

"Nestled in the North Georgia Mountains at the southern end of the Appalachian range, Blue Ridge has grown from a quiet railroad town into one of Georgia's most beloved mountain getaways."

The story of Blue Ridge begins long before European settlers arrived. The Cherokee people called these mountains home for centuries, drawn by the abundant wildlife, fertile valleys, and the Toccoa River that winds through the landscape. The area remained Cherokee territory until the Indian Removal Act of 1838 forced the Cherokee westward on the Trail of Tears.

Following Cherokee removal, settlers from the Carolinas and Virginia moved into the region, drawn by the promise of rich farmland and timber in the mountains. The town of Blue Ridge was officially established in 1886 when the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad extended its line into Fannin County, bringing commerce and connectivity to this remote mountain community.

Named for the Blue Ridge Mountains that surround it, the town quickly became the county seat of Fannin County and a hub for the region's timber, mining, and agricultural industries. The railroad—which still runs today as the famous Blue Ridge Scenic Railway—was the lifeblood of the community for decades.
